Donald Trump just stepped up the pressure on Iran.
Trump said that the United States will be using Iranian money that the United States has to pay for “any and all damages done to Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto.”
Please let this statement serve to represent, until further notice, that from this point forth, any and all damages done to Ships, Cargo, or anything related thereto, will be paid for by Iranian Money that the United States has in its possession, and controls. It is unclear how much of Iran’s frozen funds are under direct control by the United States.
In April, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned financial institutions in foreign countries that they could face secondary sanctions for handling Iran’s money.
Under long-standing U.S. sanctions, Iranian government property and interests in property that enter the United States or come under the possession or control of U.S. persons generally can be blocked or frozen by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The precise amount of Iranian money currently under direct U.S. control is unclear. Much of Iran’s restricted money is held in foreign banks rather than in the United States, though Washington can pressure foreign institutions to freeze Iranian funds through secondary sanctions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in April that the administration had warned financial institutions in China, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman that they could face secondary sanctions for handling Iranian money. He also said Iran’s Gulf neighbors had become more willing to freeze Iranian funds because of Tehran’s conduct during the war.
