The United States struck targets in Iran on Wednesday.

The strikes shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones.

According to an official cited by Reuters, “These actions were measured, ‌purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire.”

Reuters reported:

The U.S. military carried out new strikes overnight in Iran targeting ‌a military site and shooting down four Iranian one-way attack drones that posed a threat around the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the military site that was struck was an Iranian ground control station in Iran’s Bandar Abbas that was about to launch a fifth drone.

The U.S. military strikes, which have not been previously reported, came during negotiations to end a three-month-old war that has killed thousands and sent global energy prices sharply higher since it began on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli attacks.

“These actions were measured, ‌purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire,” the official said.

Trump sent a message to Iran earlier on Wednesday, making it clear that the midterms weren’t going to change his Iran strategy.

Trump said, “They thought they were gonna outwait me. You know, ‘We’ll outwait him. He’s got the midterms…I don’t care about the midterms.”

But Trump on Wednesday dismissed the idea that the upcoming elections would shape his Iran strategy.

“They thought they were gonna outwait me. You know, ‘We’ll outwait him. He’s got the midterms,’” Trump said. “I don’t care about the midterms.”

Trump acknowledged there’s still work to do, but he spoke with a measure of certainty that the two sides would get there.

“They want very much to make a deal,” Trump said. “So far, they haven’t gotten there. We’re not satisfied with it, but we will be — either that or we’ll have to just finish the job.”
