Trump-backed Ed Gallrein won the election to represent Kentucky’s 4th district.
He defeated Democrat Melissa Strange.
Republican Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, is projected to win in the race to represent Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, a seat currently held by President Trump critic Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
Gallrein, whom Trump endorsed, defeated Democrat Melissa Strange and Libertarian Jeremy Todd for the seat. The president had stumped for Gallrein in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
Gallrein led by 29 percentage points — 59 percent to 30 percent — with a small share of the vote reported by DDHQ as of 6:20 p.m. EST Tuesday.
Gallrein defeated Massie in the GOP primary back in May, securing the nomination with 54.9 percent of the vote to Massie’s 45.1 percent.
In the primary, Gallrein beat Massie after Trump endorsed Gallrein.
Congressman Thomas Massie, one of the most vocal Republican critics of Donald Trump, has lost his fight for re-election to a challenger endorsed by the president.
Ed Gallrein, a former Navy Seal, will now compete in November’s midterm election after his victory in the Kentucky primary on Tuesday.
The contest, the most expensive primary in the history of the House of Representatives, had been widely seen as a key test of President Trump’s decade-long grip on the Republican Party.
Trump repeatedly called for voters to back Gallrein over the incumbent Massie, who he described as a “major sleazebag” and “the worst Republican congressman in history”.
Great News!
