Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are not retiring this year, according to new reporting.

Alito and Thomas are important members of the conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

CBS reported:

Sources close to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito confirm that he is not planning to retire this year. Sources close to Justice Clarence Thomas also tell CBS News that he does not plan to step down.

That indicates that this year, with the midterm elections on the horizon, President Trump will not be able to plan on an opportunity to make his fourth nomination to the Supreme Court.

Trump previously praised Alito.

Trump called Alito “one of the great justices of our time.”

Fox News reported:

Trump said he thinks Alito, who has sided with him on most high-profile cases, is “in very good physical health” and called him “one of the great justices of our time.”

“Justice Alito is an unbelievable justice,” Trump said.

Trump said he is prepared to nominate new justices if any justices retire.

The Hill reported:

President Trump said he is “prepared” to name another justice to the Supreme Court if one of the older members retires.

“It could be two, could be three, could be one. I don’t know — I’m prepared to do it,” he told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo in an interview that aired Wednesday.

Trump said he has a shortlist of people he would nominate to the Supreme Court but added that he was not sure there would be an opening by the end of the year.

The president has reportedly been interested in naming Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to the court.
